Doors…

The problem with doors is that people talk about them when they are closed, and you hear about them when they are open.

Metaphorically, a door is a very rich word – an open door policy is appreciated, and a closed door is the lack of opportunity. My issue with doors however, is with the physical form.

You see, my daily commute to work takes me through Grand Central station (in New York). I walk through 3 sets of swinging doors, and 1 revolving door. What I have observed is that people tend to rush through them without a thought. Now – most of you are probably thinking – “why on earth do I have to give a thought about walking through doors?”. The answer is simple – it is common courtesy.

I have noticed that people in New York just walk through doors – train station or otherwise. The way I have grown up is to hold the door for the person behind you…. I have rarely seen that here. It was also suggested to me that it is more of a British thing to do…. yes…. manners are a British thing.

Good people of New York – hold doors open for people…. it’s a good thing to do!
