Yesterday I went on and on about how amazing NYC was [read all about it], with project colleagues, while we were stuck there thanks to the lava and ashes spewing out of that volcano which is a spelling mistake.
Today, I will explain to you the flip side of this.
We have a crappy situation at work – one of our senior colleagues jumped over to the client side of the project. Now, this colleague – he isnt a hard worker as such…. or atleast hasen’t been for the time that I have been around. He jumped ship at a critical moment, wasted project time, raised false hopes with his new employer, and as a result has effectvely been downgraded from the position that he was employed for.
The frustrating thing is – I like this guy, and so do the others on our side of the project team. We think of him as a friend, yet – when he has switched sides, there is a sense of anger and frustration towards his actions and how it has affected others on the project. It bothers me that one of the strongest people I know broke down in tears because of the actions (lack of) that our ex-colleague has taken. The politics are getting dirtier, and there is a constant attempt at claiming false merit.
These are the realities of a project, and one should not get pulled down by it – I know. It just feels so much more difficult when a ‘friend’ does it to you (no friends or foes in the work environment – right?)
One thing which DID make me feel better at the end of a very frustrating day, was this new post from Mark & Angel. I have snapped out the favourite part of this post for all of you to read; the full post can be found [here].
Every difficult moment in our lives is accompanied by an opportunity for personal growth and creativity. But in order to attain this growth and creativity, we must first learn to control our emotions. We must recognize that difficulties pass like everything else in life. And once they pass, all we’re left with are our unique experiences with each other and this crazy world, and the lessons we’ve learned along the way.
I guess I better pack my gloves away….
