The in-laws are all right….

by biscuitinabasket on January 8, 2010

It has been an eventful two weeks in the life of yours truly; not only have I been travelling and meeting new and interesting people, I have gone ahead and met the two most important people who will exist in my life.

I ofcourse am talking about my Mother and Father in-law (to be).

As much as I love and am crazy about my fiancee, my in-laws will be the centre point of this relationship. Perhaps it is a cultural thing i.e. the Asian sub-continental culture ‘dictates’ that our parents know what is best for us, and it is up to them to decide for us….. even when we have hit our mid-70s.

Put simply – I really really like my in-laws! Dad in-law has all the topics in the world that I can talk about, and we have had long long conversations on any and everything we could think of. I think my mom in-law likes me a lot because I have to date eaten every item of food which she has put in front of me (mainly because it was super yummy).

My view about them (theoretically speaking) , before I met them ofcourse, was very very different.

I am surrounded by people in day to day life who have major issues in their lives. In my team at work, half the people are from divorced or broken families, and the other half can’t stand their in-laws and at times parents! Their ‘stories’ created this stereotype in my mind, and it related to the in-law issues which I have seen on TV on documentaries, soaps and serials.

That is why I don’t watch TV.

The reality, well – MY reality, couldn’t be further from all the stories that I have heard to date. I am slowly learning to understand and accept that my in-laws are my second set of parents (technically fourth or fifth, but that argument is for another day). Also, the fact that I got on well with the in-laws, and then my parents got on like a house on fire with the in-laws emphasizes the reality that if it’s not my parents who will be telling us how to do things in life, it will probably be hers!

And look, you’re engaged! MashaAllah! :D I am so so happy for you, I remember well how I sensed the sadness of the past when I had read old entries of you, but that’s the past! May Allah subhana we ta’ala bless your marriage! :D
