This is WHY I do it….

by biscuitinabasket on May 26, 2009

So, I went back to work today after a break of 10 days…

Normally, the drill works like so -

  • Open up MS Outlook and wait for yonks for emails to come through (79 emails accumulated over 5 working days).
  • Catchup with my boss on client statuses during the week.
  • Get frustrated by client calls at 9am.
  • Catch up with Program Manager and Support team on issues.
  • Catch up with people in the team I work in.
  • Get through emails.
  • Have late lunch.

Today was the same, but with added urgency and the fact that I may have had to travel to the Middle East at the end of the week for a few days to aid a client in completing their implementation of our software. Luckily we managed to avert that (mainly because the client is a royal pain where the sun doesn’t shine, and I didn’t want to spend time in their office – This client expects us to anticipate their problems through a crystal ball).

I am also involved in a parallel project which is at an infancy stage. We have a “big day” in the life of this project at the end of the week, and we are looking at the possibility of acquiring a humongous insurance group as our client.

I always highlight the fact that what I do gets appreciated often at work, and in-turn my incentive is to work harder and raise the bar for others. Today, there was a stand off between 3 directors fighting over me and as to where I should be focusing more i.e. Middle East project or Insurance group project. It was a touch embarrassing because it was a loud conversation in the middle of the floor… but the nature of the “argument” brought a smile to my face; it was as if 2 kids were pulling a teddy bear’s arms in opposite directions.

Obviously the smile got wiped off when they told me to focus on both :P

For now, I’ll be riding out a severely tough 10-12 days in order to get one project finished and try and get onboard when the other is initiated…. but this is where my motivation at work lies…

I constantly have this discussion with people over their “dream job”. The hypocrites amongst these who say they are in their dream job, also believe in getting rich quick by playing the lottery twice/thrice a week, week in week out. I really really wonder where the dream lies, when these folk want to jump ship as soon as possible.

On the flip side, you have those who work to pay the bills. These are the most difficult of people because their work is generally aimless and lacks motivation to perform.

Most of us will spend a goooood majority of our life working in a job, not necessarily one that we love, and often something which will help clear our bills and expenses on a day to day basis. My question then is this – what is stopping you from getting your dream job? Is the dream job a dream too far – unrealistic?

My dream job? Well, I am at the bottom of this hill now…. and when I get to the top, I think it will be achieved. Till then, it’s hard work, determination, day dreams, and belief – nothing more, nothing less!

Hmmm

I think if they were in their “dream job” they shouldn’t want to jump ship so quickly. A dream job is something you LOVE doing, and getting paid is just another bonus, right?

Even if they want to win the lottery so that they can pay off mortgages and spend more QT w/ their family, if you’re so passionate about something, why would you want to stop doing it completely?

I think some people don’t know what their ‘dream job’ is…. or they’re like “Peter” in Office Space and their Dream is to do nothing :P

For others, I think it might be a money thing. For me, I love giving back to the community and helping others. I could always get a job working for a non-profit, but the money isn’t there. So I do community service and give back in other ways.

The job I was in prior to getting laid off was a pretty good gig from the outside, but it was soooooooo stressful and crazy. It didn’t make me a millionaire, but compared to what my friends made, I was doing really well for myself, and that was one of the few things that kept me there for those years.

Whoever said ‘money isn’t everything’ was definitely on to something :)

I think that it’s important to at least semi-like what you do and right now that’s what I’m looking for. Ideal would be a job I looooooooooooove with coworkers that I looooooooove. Right now I’ll settle for semi-like and good pay!

My ‘dream job’: To do nothing but be paid for it. Or read manga and watch anime and get paid for it.

… But since none of that is realistic, the job I would like to do is in the field of medicine. Right now, it is too far, though not unrealistic. I just need those high grades I’m not so confident in getting. =_=”’ And just like you, I too am at the bottom of the hill. It will take a while -a long while- before I reach where i want to… Until then, it’ll be nights of studying, stress and utter hopelessness. *sigh* v_v

and so i say that you will quite get there because your words clearly spill what is on your insides.
so 10 days just flew eh :) wonder how time manages to fly when it is meant to crawl much of the times.

your work sounds tiring but obviously you have your soul into it and that makes it less of a drag :)

all the best!

Well I doubt the job I’m currently performing is my dream job,but I love it,really do!
There is no such thing if you ask me!With work comes responisbility, the higher up you are the more of it there is.Plus there is always something about a job you don’t like, for example even the so called dream job they advertised includes the risk of being eaten by sharks :p
What I’m trying to say…well I don’t know really what I’m trying to say but you know what I mean right?;D I mean to say there are no dream jobs just jobs you enjoy,if you enjoy them its up to you of course!I do enjoy my job despite not being no where my ideal job…enough already, see what you’ve done when you said comment more :D

Hey.. I bumped onto ur blog via twitter (no idea how). Anyway I read ur post..I really don’t think there’s anything called ideal job or “Dream” job.. One gets ultimate satisfaction only when one pursues entrepreneurship – i.e. one being his/her own boss. I know so many people who like doing something but do not pursue that as a full time career because that job probably is not that well paid.. Money is quite crucial for a job seeker.. and I won’t be wrong if I say that an ideal or a DREAM job for more than 95% of those employed would be the ones which pay more. People don’t really care about the job profile if one can lead a luxurious life with present job.
