Close encounters from the other side….

Today… we shall talk about my road rage issues…. and why sometimes my actions are justifiable!

I was on my way to Leicester to visit my grandparents’ yesterday (I have been on the road way too often in the last 2 months), and one stretch of the highway that we come across is a 4 lane (or 8 lane including the other side), low traffic, ‘high’ speed stretch which lasts about 10 miles or so. It is not “uncommon” for people to drive 20-25 miles above the speed limit on this road… mainly because if you are sensible and careful (depending on the conditions ofcourse), you can get through this stretch in double quick time. Lets call this road ‘A road’.

Now, I won’t for one moment say that I am the most perfect driver in the world. However, when I am on the highway, I would say I am pretty good at what I do. I know what is around me, I overtake sensibly, I drive in the left lane (slow lane – most of you guys are on the wrong side of the road, remember? ;) ) when I need to, and I am patient behind stupid drivers (I’ll come to this in a sec…)…

Today when I was overtaking in the second lane from the left, on A road, this 4×4 literally pulls into my lane as we are going side by side. As a result, I had to swerve big time, and I was lucky that there was no car besides me, else I probably wouldn’t be typing this post today. Whats more, this guy was trying to overtake the car in front of him and then take an exit which was less than 2-300 metres ahead of him. I really wonder what the guy in the 4×4 was thinking….

  1. I was overtaking a long line of cars, so surely if he used his mirrors he would have seen me coming.
  2. Even if I was in his blind spot, why the hell would you want to overtake at high speed and then attempt to take an exit which is less than 300 metres ahead of you? The way he was driving, if something doesn’t go right, did that person have enough time to react before the exit without endangering others?

I am getting really frustrated by drivers of 4×4’s, drivers of tuned up cars, and drivers of big ass Mercs and BMWs. The way things are in the UK, if you own any of these vehicles, the drivers seem to think that they are above the law. They totally lack and street sense or any driving etiquette. I seriously think that the 70mph restriction on our highways should be higher, but that is because I think if people drive a little bit more sensibly, we wouldn’t have issues.

Another thing which I have noticed recently is that people think that busy highways with thousands of cars on them are a race track. The number of times you see cars slaloming between traffic on a busy highway is crazy. These folks are generally racing each other and just pull in and out of lanes without any care for their actions. WTF people – I dont want to get killed by your madness!! I don’t think the cops or authorities are doing anything about this because the only things we hear are about people getting caught for overspeeding, but hardly ever anything about people getting done for bad driving.

Let me explain more about my issues with speed.

I have been finding it more and more frustrating off recently that I have had to constantly undertake cars rather than overtake them on the highway. For those of you who don’t know – undertake means going past a slower car from the incorrect lane i.e. slow lane. Yesterday, I was stuck behind a 4×4 (again) who was leisurely driving in the fast lane, and kept randomly braking even though there was nobody in front of the 4×4. Eventually, I had to change lanes a number of times, and finally undertook the 4×4 to get in front of it. Why do people not use the correct lane to drive in? More over… why do people not use their FRIGGIN’ mirrors to see a faster car coming wwwwwwwwWWWWWWAAAAAYYYYYYYYY behind them, and move lanes safely?

Most accidents on the highway happen because of driver error rather than high speed. I am in no way supporting overspeeding, but the greater concern has to be bad driving!

haaaaaaaaaaaa *sighs*

I feel better now! :)

Come to Saudi and then you can see this multiplied by 100 on a daily, no hourly, no MINUTELY basis! Weaving and winding and reversing on the hardshoulder because they missed their turning etc etc is normal here. Thank God I, as a woman, am not permitted to drive here because I wouldn’t be as patient as my husband. I get really irate at that kind of driving!
